Kyle Huber (@asenseofhuber)

Our debut collaboration for the TouchNote Signature Series is with Kyle Huber (@asenseofhuber), a graphic designer turned Instagram sensation with over 350,000 fans. Describing himself as “Missouri raised, California amazed”, Kyle’s photography showcases Los Angeles and beyond through his unique lens.

One of Kyle’s trademarks is forced perspective. From clambering up giant ice-creams to dunking Connect Four counters like basketballs, this technique produces highly imaginative and awe-inspiring imagery.

Another well-loved aspect of Kyle’s work was #TurtleTuesday. As the name suggests, each Tuesday he posted lighthearted, creative photos of adorable little turtles, which has since snowballed into a huge phenomenon. Despite the series coming to an end, Kyle has teamed up with TouchNote exclusively to allow a selection of his favourite turtle photos to be available for purchase in our premium quality gallery frames.

We caught up with Kyle to find out more about his journey into photography, what inspires him, and how #TurtleTuesday came to be.

How did you get started with photography? Was there a particular moment you realised you wanted to do it professionally?

I’ve always been obsessed with creating art. My passion began with drawing and painting, but evolved into the digital world when I attended Kansas City Art Institute and became a graphic designer. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2010, I fell in love with California as my design career took off and my skill sets expanded. It was then that I discovered my interest in photography, thanks to the iPhone and the launch of Instagram.

What do you like most about LA?

I love how it’s a central hub for everything I could possibly need for travel, food and entertainment. Southern California has so many incredible places to explore all within just a short drive, from the beaches to the lakes, and from the deserts to the mountains. The Santa Monica Pier is probably my favourite spot to photograph in LA because of the iconic ferris wheel and the beautiful sunsets over the ocean.

Do you have a favourite photo of yours? Is there an interesting story behind it?

It’s “Beach Camo” where my clothes perfectly match the horizon line of the ocean. A lot of times, my most creative ideas come at the last moment or while I’m enroute to wherever I’m shooting. This one was a bit different and I’m really excited about how it came together. When I first saw this tank top at the store a few months before, I was instantly inspired and knew it would be perfect for this vision. I wore it often, always waiting for the perfect colour matching opportunity that never came. Finally, while exploring Puerto Rico with @WaterProject, I was able to make it a reality at one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever stood on.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Many places, but significantly from those who I surround myself with in the creative process. I look up to other artists who think outside of the box, innovate ideas and avoid repeating themselves. I’m inspired daily by my peers in the travel photography community, especially my talented friends in the Sony Alpha Imaging Collective. As we continue to discover and share the world’s beauty, we grow together through the power of nature.

What makes your photography unique?

I’ve always been fascinated by magic, so that’s probably why I have been so drawn to forced perspective photography. I love the idea of creating illusions by making the foreground and background subjects interact in clever ways. I think this makes for unique, fun and memorable imagery. I’ve challenged myself to keep trying new ideas, and it’s kept my interest in this technique going strong.

Why did you start taking photos of turtles?

I got my first turtle when I was 12 years old. I thought it was the coolest thing and they quickly became my favourite animal. After living in LA for a few years, I discovered I could buy them for a couple bucks in Chinatown and I just couldn’t help myself. Before I knew it, I owned 8 at one point! I came up with the idea of #TurtleTuesday when coming up with a caption for the first picture I took of my new little pets. I got a lot of positive reaction from it and decided to start posting new photos of them every week. Three years later, I had never missed a single Tuesday and had made it “my thing.”

Do you have a favourite turtle?

Shelly is the most photogenic and friendly turtle I ever raised. Although she’s moved on to a bigger pond, she was the star of my favourite photos from the series during her earlier years. Besides being a lively ham for the camera, she had two tiny hearts on her belly that were super unique!

What’s the biggest adventure your turtles have been on?

While the turtles have adventured all over California, and even all the way to the Valley of Fire in Nevada, the most unique thing they did was star in a Nickelodeon commercial spot that I created with them dressed as the Ninja Turtles!

What was your best trip of all time?

One of my favourite trips so far has been to South Africa when I was creating an ad campaign for the tourism board in 2017. Besides seeing all sides of what this country has to offer, I even pushed myself to new limits by jumping off the world’s tallest bungee bridge! This truly was a trip of a lifetime that I’ll cherish forever.

What cameras are you using? Do you have any kit preferences?

I am a Sony Alpha ambassador and currently shoot on the Sony A7R III with mostly a 16–35mm wide angle lens and sometimes my 24–240mm lens for telephoto shooting. I use my iPhone for a lot of day-to-day shooting, as well.

What set up would you recommend to someone who’s new to photography?

It’s truly not about the gear– It’s about the idea or the vision being created. Your smartphone is a great tool to begin with and should be all you need to get better at building your eye for photography.

Do you have any tips or tricks you’d like to share for young photographers? What should they prioritize or focus on?

Practice! You’re not going to be a great photographer right off the bat. You have to put the time in to learn what works and what doesn’t through trial and error. I also feel strongly about using as much screen-space as you’re allowed when sharing your work online (post portrait crops rather than landscape crops). And pay attention to the details. Good craft goes a long way: Don’t rush, straighten your horizontal/vertical lines, and don’t over-edit/destroy your image!

What do you think of TouchNote?

Besides being supportive of artists and photographers, I think it’s a convenient and easy to use service for high quality printing/framing.
